The Autumn Equinox: Rituals for Balance, Light and Letting Go

On 22 September, day and night stand exactly equal. Twelve hours of light, twelve of dark, everywhere on earth at once. And then the dark begins to win.

For most of us it passes unnoticed — a Tuesday, slightly cooler, the heating going on. But it is one of only two moments in the year when everything is in perfect balance, and people have marked it for as long as people have marked anything.

What the autumn equinox actually is

The equinox is the point where the sun crosses the celestial equator, and light and dark divide the day evenly. Older traditions call it Mabon — the second harvest, the gathering-in, the pause between abundance and winter.

It is also the day Libra season begins. Of all twelve signs, Libra is the scales — the only one represented by an object rather than a creature, and the only one whose entire meaning is equilibrium. The sign of balance starts on the day of balance. That is not a coincidence.

Why balance is the whole point

Spring’s equinox carries the same equality, but it is tipping towards the light. Autumn’s tips the other way.

Which makes this the honest one. It does not ask you to be endlessly growing, endlessly bright, endlessly productive.

It says something quieter and more useful: both halves are real, and today they weigh the same.

5 ways to mark the equinox

01  Take stock of what you gathered

Mabon is a harvest festival. Not what you are chasing — what this year actually gave you. Write down three things.

02  Let something go

The dark half is coming either way. What are you carrying into it that you do not need? An old commitment, a grudge, a version of yourself from January.

03  Eat something seasonal, slowly

Apples, blackberries, squash, bread. Harvest food, eaten with attention rather than at a desk.

04  Sit with the light

Watch the sunset on the 22nd. It is the last one where the day matched the night.

05  Choose your reminder

Something you will see every day through winter. A candle you light each evening, a word on your mirror, a piece you never take off.

Wearing the balance

Symbols work because they are small and constant. You do not have to remember what you decided — you just have to catch sight of it.

✦  Sun and moon, together

The Celestial Harmony Sun & Moon Necklace is the equinox in a single piece — both halves, one chain, neither winning. If you take one idea from this, take that one.

✦  Carry the light

The Sun Pendant Necklace for warmth and confidence held through the darker months. Wear the light rather than waiting for it.

✦  Honour the other half

The Chunky Moon Ring for intuition, cycles, and the quieter work that happens when nobody is watching.

✦  If the season is yours

The Zodiac Tarot Necklace — Libra begins on the 22nd, and the scales have never needed explaining.

All waterproof, tarnish-free and hypoallergenic — made to be worn every day through autumn and not thought about again.

Why gold and turquoise belong to this season

Gold is the colour of the sun, of harvest light, of warmth held onto as the days shorten. It is what you reach for when the light starts leaving.

Turquoise has been worn for protection and clarity for thousands of years — across Egypt, Persia and the Americas, always for the same reason. As you move into the darker half, it is the stone of steady sight.

Together they are the equinox palette: the sun you are saying goodbye to, and the clarity you will need without it.

I gather what I have grown.   I let the rest go.   Both halves of me are true.

Frequently asked questions

When is the autumn equinox in 2026?

The autumn equinox falls on 22 September 2026 in the UK. The exact date shifts between the 22nd and 23rd each year, depending on where the Earth sits in its orbit.

What is Mabon?

Mabon is the traditional name for the autumn equinox — the second of three harvest festivals. It marks the point of balance between summer’s abundance and winter’s rest, and is traditionally a time for gratitude and letting go.

What jewellery symbolises balance?

Sun and moon pieces worn together are the clearest symbol of balance — light and dark held in one place. Libra’s scales carry the same meaning, which is why star sign jewellery is popular around the equinox.

How do I start an equinox ritual if I have never done one?

Start with one thing, not five. Watch the sunset on the 22nd, or write down three things this year gave you. A ritual only works if you actually do it — small and repeated beats elaborate and abandoned.
